Thank God Jagex formed in a time when it could stay independently. When the player base started to decline in the late 2000s an editor would probably have shut down Jagex. In fact, Raven Software started laying people off in the midst of Warzone made billions, so even a win could mean disaster for the players behind the game.
The success stories we do receive are just a few rare exceptions. The stars had to align for Among Us to find its fan base even after it was released and perhaps the greatest previous example - and without the assistance of a major publisher was Undertale that was released in 2017.
It's for this reason that RuneScape The Beginning 20 Years isn't just essential to all fans of games, but also for anyone interested in how the game's time is moving in. It's a reminder that all of us must support the indie community that's constantly fighting for attention in a huge market.
Most importantly is that it's a chance to be happy with how humble we started. The gaming industry may seem like an utterly abhorrent place sometimes (because it can be), but at its heart, there are passionate gamers with the experience they'd like to share with us.
